As Easter races up to meet us in 2017, it’s no wonder that salon owners across the country are crying out, asking what they are supposed to do during this period. At HABA we are fielding calls left right and center about obligations, must-have’s and don’t-do’s for public holidays, and we are here to give you all the facts.
Get the basics right
There are so many public holidays happening during this period, and this is why most business owners are getting confused. There have also been some changes in the past few years about what days are considered public holidays across Australia.
This is the definitive list:
DATE |
PUBLIC HOLIDAY |
---|---|
Friday 14 April |
Good Friday |
Saturday 15 April |
Easter Saturday |
Sunday 16 April |
Easter Sunday |
Monday 17 April |
Easter Monday |
Tuesday 25 April |
Anzac Day |
School holidays run from 8 April – 25 April 2017.
For those of you working in retail centers, it’s important to check with them what days they are operating or what special hours are on offer during this period to avoid any difficulty on their side.
Get it done!
With so many public holidays in the period, it’s not uncommon for staff to create a “bundle deal” and take some annual leave at the same time for an extra-long break. That’s great for your staff and morale, but not so great for your business.
Through some good planning, you can make sure that your salon continues to run at optimum performance through this period. Make sure that your salon policy regarding the submission of leave is up to date and enforced so that you can plan in advance. Ensure that all annual leave is marked out in your salon system so that you can plan appointments around annual leave and consider opening one of the days marked as a Public Holiday during the Easter period (generally businesses operate on Easter Saturday) to maximise the time you can get customers in chair or on table.
Follow the rules
Public Holiday rates and Leave entitlements have definitely been a hot topic in our industry of late, and are often the cause for complaints and even claims through the Fair Work Ombudsman during this period. Make sure that you are paying the correct rate according to the latest updates to the Hair & Beauty Award, which you can always check by calling HABA on (02) 9221 9911. If penalty rates and entitlements send your head spinning, you can always subscribe your salon to HABA Payroll, ensuring that no matter what changes occur, your staff are paid correctly, offering you peace of mind and insurance against claims to Fair Work.
By getting a little organised around Easter, you can make sure that your salon runs at its best and that this period can be a stress-free time for everyone in your business – from your staff to the owner!
