PROPOSED PENALTY RATES REDUCTIONS IN THE HAIR & BEAUTY INDUSTRY

Posted February 12, 2018

Information from employers urgently needed

For nearly 12 months now, we have all been talking about the proposed wage rate change for Sundays and public holidays. This has been a hotly contested issue, not just in the hair & beauty industry, but across Australia more broadly.

Employers in the pharmacy, fast food, retail and hospitality industries have already successfully secured reductions in the penalty rates that they are required to pay. Against this backdrop, the Fair Work Commission has observed that penalty rates in our industry appear to similarly require review. However, the Commission has also indicated that they will need to hear evidence from employers before any decision regarding a change to the current penalty rates can be made.

HABA, represented by our partners at Ai Group Workplace Lawyers, are advancing a case in support of a reduction in Sunday and Public Holidays penalty rates applicable under the Hair & Beauty Industry Award 2010. While we are not seeking the complete removal of such penalty rates, we do intend to argue that it is fair that employers receive some relief from the current high costs of operating on these days.

That’s where you come in.

To win this case, HABA needs your help. We are inviting all salon owners across Australia, whether you are a HABA member or not, to provide us with evidence that demonstrates the impact that Sunday and public holiday penalty rates have on your business.

If you are willing to discuss the effect of these penalty rates, or potentially prepared to provide a statement to support our claim, please get in touch with Ruchi Bhatt at Ai Group Workplace Lawyers via email on ruchi.bhatt@aigroup.com.au or by phone on 02 9466 5513.

As a member of HABA, salon owners can feel secure in the knowledge that they are represented by an organisation that truly has their best interests at heart. HABA is dedicated to protecting and promoting our members’ interests by being the leading voice for hair & beauty industry employers in Fair Work Commission proceedings that have a direct and significant impact on business.
