Reminder about casual penalty rates increase

In October 2021 , HABA members were informed of the Fair Work Commission’s (FWC) decision to vary the weekend penalty rate provisions for casual employees under the Hair and Beauty Industry Award 2020.

The penalty rate increases are being phased in over six stages, with the most recent increase taking effect from the first full pay period that starts on or after 31 December 2022. The current phase and the most recent weekend penalty rates are highlighted in green below.

Saturday weekend penalty rates

The penalty rates for all ordinary hours worked by a casual employee on a Saturday within the hours of 7.00am – 6.00pm are:

Overtime penalty rates for casual employees remain unchanged i.e., 175% for the first 3 hours and 225% for any remaining hours.

 

Sunday weekend penalty rates

The penalty rates for all ordinary and overtime hours worked by a casual employee on a Sunday are:

What’s next?

There are two remaining phases, with the next phase commencing on 30 April 2023 and the final phase commencing on 31 December 2023.

On 31 December 2023, the penalty rates for casual employees will be fixed. This means that from 31 December 2023, the casual penalty rate for ordinary hours on a Saturday will remain as 158% and the casual penalty rates for work performed on a Sunday will be 225%.
